At ifatree Rescue, we are dedicated to improving the quality of life for as many animals as possible in the Dominican Republic. We seek to accomplish this through direct medical assistance, rescues and adoptions, outreach and education.
We have been operating ifatree Rescue in the Las Terrenas area of the Dominican Republic, previously known as Coconut Hound Haven Las Terrenas, since 2020.
We run a full time shelter dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of dozens of animals. At any given time we house approximately 50 animals. We hope to move as many of these animals as possible into forever homes locally and abroad. We are currently in the process of constructing a brand new facility that will be able to house even more animals, though our goal is always to find forever families for our animals. At the shelter, we only home abandoned baby animals or adult street animals in need of emergency, life saving medical treatment who would not be able to survive on the street. For every animal for whom we are able to find a home, there are dozens more who need our love, care and services.
We additionally provide emergency medical care, anti-parasitic medication and spay and neuter clinics throughout the year. While our new facility is under construction, we cannot house cats, so we've launched a community funded trap/sterilization/release program for the feral cats in town and often assist in finding local homes for kittens.
in 2024, we:
provided anti-parasitic medication to over 750 street animals
provided emergency vet care to 48 animals
facilitated the trap/sterilization/release of around 30 cats
provided emergency spay surgeries for 8 dogs
spayed and neutered over 100 dogs and cats in our free clinics
Adoptions have slowed due to several factors in the US and Canada, including new restrictions placed on incoming dogs in both of those countries, but we were still able to send 9 dogs to Canada for adoption in 2024. In the 4 previous years, we had sent over 100. We are hopeful that conditions will continue to improve and adoption levels will return to normal. In the meantime, our goal is to provide the animals here in the Dominican Republic with the best lives possible.

The most important thing we need is funds to keep our facility running. We purchase food, medicine, nutritional supplements and equipment. Our animals eat 2 full, 40-pound bags of food each day. We work closely with a local vet who provides high quality vet care at cost, but with the amount of emergency medical care we cover, this can still add up. You can donate online through our website or by Venmo or PayPal @ifatreerescue. If you are local and have supplies such as old sheets or dog crates, please email us. Thank you!
The first thing you should do if the animal is injured is capture them safely if you can and take them to a local vet. Click here for the phone numbers of local veterinarians: https://ifatreerescue.org/local-veterinary-contacts Returning to the location to find the animal later is usually unsuccessful. For advice on specific cases please email us. Keep in mind that our shelter, along with all other shelters in the DR, are always operating over capacity. We only take in animals in dire emergencies. Care can be provided in place for many cases.
We would love you to adopt one of our many cats and dogs available for adoption! To view their photos and learn about more about each and every one of them, visit our adoption page at: https://rb.gy/mgk0mn

To the faithful I have never left.
We dedicate the work of our rescue to our dearest Jamie who left us too soon. Wherever she is, we know she watches over each of our animals and shepherds those who leave us on their next journey.
